5In Depth Zill workMay 19, 2009
By K. Heath
I was so happy to find copies of this available. Saying that, I must caution new dancers that this is an in-depth video. For a beginning zill player, I would recommend you get a feel for them first before tackling this.

Susu is an excellent and experienced drummer and together with Zaina they make a great pair of teachers. However, this is not the standard zill work you would be presented in a class or as a member of a tribe. This work goes beyond the usual patterned hand work, and if you are really enthusiastic about your playing this is a must have for you. If you are looking for the basics, you should get a pair of zills and get familiar with them first or you may feel a little overwhelmed. Do it on your feet and to drums so that you learn to recognize the rhythms. Once you feel comfortable and a little coordinated, then I would highly recommend this video for you because I have yet to see anyone play as well as Zaina.

I would also recommend this for the Zill or Sagat players--the person who plays along with the band for the dancer. A drummer would also love this, as it is a great way to embellish a band's work.

Zaina plays the zills the way they were meant to be--as an instrument rather than a pleasing noise maker. Experimenting with her hand work, her style, and mixing zills to create different notes will be much more intuitive to someone who purchases this video.

For the dancer or the drummer, this is a fantastic peek into just how much your work can be expanded. It was a pleasure to add to my collection.

5Little Hype but Great QualityMar 14, 2010

I haven't heard much hype about this video, but it has quickly become my very favorite for zill playing. While there are a few finger cymbal playing DVDs in the market, this is the first I have worked with that teaches you how to play with your ear. No impossible patterns to follow along with. Listen to the drum, and you are closer than you think to being a great zill player.

The following rhythms are covered:
Basic
Gallop
Singles
Ayoub
Malfouf
Karachi
Kheelegy
Fellahi
Beledi
Maqsoum
Bolero
Saaidi
Wahda
Chiftitelli
Masmoudi

This isn't a video that breaks down individual rhythms dum-tek by dum-tek; it's about listening to the rhythms, one by one, and finding the patterns to follow along with your zills. Zaina doesn't just ring the zills; you learn how to create a pattern of Teks, Clacks and Rings to develop dexterity. Your cymbals can be a rich musical accompaniment to the drum.

One of my favorite things about this video is you don't get distracted by too much talking. I suggest a pen and paper to write down both the zill patterns (RLRL) and the recommended combos of Teks, Clacks and Rings. This made it easier to follow along the second and third time around, once I understood the method. You get to see Zaina play in slow motion, with each pattern written under the screen shot. You then get to play along with the drum.

Basic camera angles. No dancing or movement. No intro to Arabic Rhythms. It's assumed that you will find this out on your own, through some other video or workshop. But even if you're not familiar with the rhythms, I think you could learn simply by listening to how Susu plays the drums--and she does so without frills, so you won't be distracted by embellishments.

Highly recommend it. Excellent for intermediate to advanced dancers.

5The Zill Bible!!Oct 17, 2008
By Royaraks
This is the best Zill DVD out on the market!!! Hands down, Zaina Zahesha is the best Zill player I've heard. She offers more than the basic "right, left, right" or "dum, dek, dum". She really knows arabic rythms and teaches you the correct way to play zills. This DVD will help you incorporate zill playing in your dance.

This DVD is very comprehensive, it is filmed from diffrent angles so you can really understand what is going on, I really like how it spells everything out, easy to follow. My children even brought out there little drums and started jamming out, it turned into a family learning experience! Very fun!! My only question is... Susu, will there ever be an instuctional drumming DVD?! Both Terri and Susu really know there stuff and are awesome instructors and performers!!
