The Cutting Edge - Going for the GoldJun 18, 2006
By Lowell S. Thompson
"best of times"
Ross Thomas lights up the film with a brio and zest not often seen. He nails the transition from a boyish inline skater to a figure skater of maturity and spunk. While the theme is similar to the original "Cutting Edge" they are not truly comparable.
Both leads use their eyes to startling effect and I found some of the scenes mesmerizingly haunting. This is a movie that makes you fall in love with the lovers. I've watched it multiple times and I'm still finding nuances in it.
I highly recommend this film.

I liked it...Jun 22, 2006
By Pixx As a quick response to offset all the bad reviews, I'd just like to say that I enjoyed it very much. I didn't think the actors were bad at all. Maybe it wasn't as good as the original, but what movie is? If it's lacking in some things, it's not enough to ruin the entire film as many people seem to think. Personally, I thought it was a cute and highly entertaining movie, and I'll stick with that opinion.

2.0 from this judge. Fails to medalMar 14, 2006
By Fruit Loop I was extremely disappointed in this movie both as a skater and a fan of "The Cutting Edge." The first negative was believability; #1 took place at the Albertville Games, but here Kate and Doug are middle-aged parents of Olympic hopeful Jackie. They didn't even bother to cast the original actors (the extremely likable and photogenic Moira Kelly and DB Sweeney) and TRY to make them up to look older; we get Scott Thompson Baker, the wooden-faced soap opera actor, as the dad. Strike 2.
The producers didn't do their homework either. While it's true that many skaters do turn to pairs because of the increased emphasis on jumps, their presentation of having Jackie and Alex break new ground by doing side-by-side triples is absurd. Pair skaters have not only done triples in their programs for the last quarter century, they're a *necessity* for any world class pair team now. Some teams are even attempting throw quadruple jumps. Hollywood, do your homework if you're going to do a movie aimed at figure skating fans! Strike 3. And, like their parents, Jackie and Alex do a move invented for the camera: the overhead throw twist while Alex does a triple toe loop jump beneath. Pretty, but not possible.
One of the worst parts for me was having Alex continually sleep with his old girlfriend although he's supposed to be in love with Jackie. He comes off looking like a jerk instead of a real hero, and Jackie just smiles and takes him back. (Doesn't anybody in the movies worry about AIDS, STDs, or fidelity anymore) Big strike 4.
The movie has its moments, but it's nowhere near as fun as the original. Cutting Edge was so much fun we could suspend belief (hockey player becoming a world class skater so fast, the secret weapon move that's in reality impossible) but #2 doesn't deliver. If there's a III, get it right this time. Only two stars.

Good Movie if you aren't a skating fanaticFeb 13, 2007
By Jess I saw a lot of negative feedback when I was looking to buy this movie. I'll be the first to admit, I don't watch figure skating. I rented this because I was in the mood for a "chick flick". To me, the skating was good, and the story off the ice was even better. There is a chemistry between the two main characters. This movie made me happy when things were going well and sad for them when they weren't. Any movie that makes you feel (well anything other than revolusion) is worth seeing atleast once, and despite the reviews, I will be adding this movie to my collection.

Like most sequels, subpar for the courseMay 07, 2006
By J. Lin I liked the Cutting Edge so I thought I would watch this when it came up on the Family channel right after the original. The story is basically the same - two mismatched skaters pair up to try for Olympic pairs skating gold, fight a scrap and eventually fall in love, a sort of Taming of the Shrew on ice. Unfortunately, seeing one after the other allows the two to be compared and the sequel does not match the original. The first Cutting Edge had much better and snappier dialogue (Doug to Kate: "So what do you do for fun, polish your knife collection?", not to mention "Toepick!"), better acting and more interesting subsidiary characters. Both movies are pretty much by the numbers in terms of plot, but the acting and chemistry between Moira Kelly and DB Sweeney somehow made it more believable. Also, if the second movie is supposed to be a sequel to the first you would have thought they might have paid some attention to the first, i.e. watched it at least once. For example, in the original, the climactic scene is the finals of the Olympics, and Kate is wearing a black dress, whereas in the sequel they show a photo of them supposedly on the victory platform and she is wearing a red dress. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy! As a final comment, the original was a theatrical release back in 1992, the producers of the sequel had so little faith in it that it was direct to DVD, which just about sums it up.
