Works for me better than anything I've triedMar 16, 2009
By S. Mouser I bought the brand new (2009) set of DVDs at[...]. One is "Change Your Body" and the other is "Accelerated Workout." I am 60 years old and have tried many at-home workout videos and a few gym classes over time. I know that most of the people who are Bar Method enthusiasts are much younger and really into sculpted, trimmed, energetic bodies, but given that Burr, the instructor (yes, the beautiful woman pictured on the cover), is 61 years old, I was very encouraged to try it myself. I haven't moved up to the accelerated workout yet, but the pace and intensity of "Change Your Body" really works for me. I truly can feel changes in my body, particularly in my legs, buttocks and abs (which have been weak). I feel much stronger every day, and have more energy. I've been dragging around with chronic fatigue for years, and this is helping beyond my expectations. Also, I've been slowly dropping excess weight because of the fat burning benefits. However, I ready on Burr's blog that the beneficial effects of fat burning are generally for people who are only about 30 pounds overweight. There are some people my age and older that I would not suggest try this without going to a studio first to learn about appropriate modifications, but for those in relatively good shape who what to improve their bodies, I find the Bar Method workout DVD to be really excellent. And of course, the younger people are going crazy for it. By the way, the DVD SET costs only $30 and can be purchased separately at $20 each. More than worth the money, even in these "tighen the belt" times.

Wow!Apr 29, 2009
By K. Schutt I have done Callanetics and Fluidity and I do like them both. However, in my opinion, the Bar Method blows them both away. I do use the bar with the workout, but you don't need one. You only need a chair, a hand towel, and light hand weights. I just love this DVD and highly recommend it.

Love it!Mar 01, 2009
By M. T. Bowers If you like The Bar Method Designer Sculpting & Fat Free, you'll love this. It's a slightly more advanced (& longer) version of the first 2 dvds. For example, DS & FF use either push-ups/tricep dips OR dumbbell work for the upper body. Accelerated Workout uses both. The principles behind the workout are the same, but I thought the ab work in particular was a big improvement. Instead of holding your head and neck up until you just about die, you vary the crunch position by placing elbows on the floor, etc. It's just as effective while being a bit more accessible. I use all 4 Bar Method dvds in rotation, and couldn't be happier with the results.

Body Changing Perfection!Nov 23, 2009
By S. Pearson

I love to exercise and have tried the latest crazes on DVDs for working out and changing my body. But, honestly, my body has changed the most -- and looks the BEST -- since starting The Bar Method. Before discovering The Bar Method, I was using Jillian Michaels and The Firm like a crazy woman, but became very frustrated when I noticed that I was firming up under the flab that remained. I wasn't tightening up despite all the workouts I was doing.
One of my friends recommended The Bar Method and I tried it out. I am not kidding when I tell you that I noticed my muscles toning and tightening (finally!) within two weeks time. Burr Leonard has said that you will notice instant changes to your body, but that a "true" Bar Method body takes about three-four months to achieve. I've been doing it every other day for the last six months, and I can say that I have dropped TWO jeans sizes since starting this program (size 10 to a size 6). And, for the first time in my life, I actually have a lean, dancer-like physique.
I rotate between all four of her DVDs, so I don't get bored and so my body doesn't get used to the routines. The Fat Free and Designer Sculpting DVDs are the best ones to start with, and then once you've become stronger you can move up to the newer DVDs, Change Your Body and Accelerated Workout. Burr Leonard is very good at giving instructions on how to position your body, and she always has someone demonstrating the easier moves for beginners.
In addition, I love Burr's infusion of humor in her workouts. During a challenging plank position, she'll say something like, "Pretend someone you used to date just walked by. You want to look good.", or during a tough thigh-chiseling series she'll say, "You'll drop a jeans size or two with this one. Stick with it!" I like that she makes these light-hearted comments during harder, more intense positions that you just want to stop doing.
I can't thank my friend enough for introducing me to The Bar Method. After all the efforts with Jillian and The Firm, I have found the workout that works best for MY body. :)
Highly recommended! It's not sold on Amazon anymore, but you can go to her website and buy it there. You won't be disappointed.

It must be working!Sep 18, 2010
By Rina Perez Since 8/19/10, I've done this 11 times. I do this dvd 2-3x/week. I get bored very easily doing the same dvd so I'd do Ellen Barrett's Slim Sculpt or Burn and Firm Pilates to alternate on strength days, then the other 3 days of the week are reserved for cardio [Hiit/bursting for 2 days and Ilaria's Powerstrike 5 for 1 day]. I allow myself 1 day to rest. Now, when I wear my jeans, they became lose that I keep pulling them up or I just wear a belt when I remember it.....So, this is good news that keeps me motivated to keep at it. My diet isn't perfect but I try to eat sensibly [around 1600 calories on most days]. The best part is a co-worker asked if I've lost weight and I said 'not really'; she said I have a slimmer shape. I just didn't mention about the lost inches I'm experiencing. I silently said to myself, bar method must be working 'coz my physique had always looked like a "barrel" and now it's developing a slimmer shape; curves if I may say so myself?! Wow, results that someone noticed! I'm so convinced now that if I keep doing this I might just reach my goal of fitting comfortably in a size 4-6 in 3-4 months. I wear a size 10 right now and sometimes I fit in an 8. It takes tremendous will power for me to stay slim 'coz like others, once I reach my goal, I slack off and become chunky again....
About the workout, the 52 minutes fly by. I like Burr Leonard 'coz her instructions are clear and precise. She's encouraging and never annoying. You can't help but admire her method; just look at her toned body at age 61 during the year this dvd was released. The moves are similar to Lotte Berk and Core Fusion which I borrowed from the library. Thank God I didn't buy them 'coz I found them boring. Don't get me wrong but I think Core Fusion would have worked if I could stay focused. It was just not interesting to me. Back to Bar Method, I still shake a lot doing the thigh/seat series, the arms/upperbody was challenging but doable and the core is something I need to focus on form for it to be effective. Tuck, tuck, tuck! By the time I do the core series, I have sweat flowing down on my face. This is basically a toning dvd and I'm sweating? You know it's not easy when you see Burr and the 3 instructors in the dvd still shaking doing the thigh series considering they've been doing this for years. Burr even says, shaking is a good sign....so don't give up on 'standing on your toes carving the thighs part'; I was in serious discomfort/ready to quit during this part and Burr would say "you'll go down 2 jean sizes if you stay with me"...I personally close my eyes and take deep breaths to survive it. I like the pretzel move and seat dancing 'coz at 45 years old, I can feel AND see my rear lifting....Oh, and the stretches after each segment, do them....the muscles are warm at this point so the deep stretches really elongates/lengthens/shapes them. You'll feel these....
Bottomline, I highly recommend this and I'm looking forward to the new release sometime soon. I bought this dvd from the bar method's website for $20 + s&h....I prefer shorter workouts but this is worth my time...
UPDATE: It's been 2 months since I started doing this DVD 2-3 X a week. Still NO weight lost but my size 8 pants are no longer tight on me. As a matter of fact, I have to pull them up a lot of times. I've been researching 'cuz I want variety so I was thinking of getting Callanetics Evolution....HOWEVER, few days ago I checked out the bar method website and they just released their new dvds:Beginner's (37 min.), Dancer's Body (62 min.), Pregnancy and Super-Sculpting. They're so new that that there are no video clips to show or no reviews published yet....I'm interested on either the Dancer's body or Super Sculpting [this particular one isn't even mentioned in the dvd store- I found it on the blog]. Can't wait to invest another $20.....
