| | | | Dancing & Learning | Home » » » So Smart!: Sights & Sounds | | | | | | | Description: | | The first of a three-volume set, So Smart is one of the many tapes created to stimulate a baby's mind (ages 3 months to 3 years). Unlike the Baby Mozart approach, So Smart is more clinical. The video contains flat, simple animation of colors, shapes, and contrasting images (volumesĀ 2 and 3 focus on letters and numbers). Geometric shapes transform into images of the real world with traditional recordings of Bach and Beethoven on the soundtrack. The tape box states that the "Brainy Benefits" of this approach lead to a child's increased ability to identify objects, soak up new information, and develop memory. A bunch of research backs up this prognosis, but it needs to be field-tested for you and your baby to see the benefits. --Doug Thomas | | | Product Details: | | | Format:

Buy it! You won't regret it!Dec 12, 1999
I first showed this to my son when he was 6 months old and he did not like it! I pulled it out again at 11 months old and he loved it! We play the tape several times a week, just before bath time and it really calms him down. I was amazed because he sits in my lap mesmerized by this tape for the entire 30 minutes. The music is beautiful and the images are entertaining.

My 7 month old daughter LOVES this tape!Nov 03, 1999
My 7 month old daughter has been watching So Smart Vol. 1 since she has been about 2 months old. It grabs a hold of her and entertains her. I love that she is listening to classical music and learning about shapes and images. Whenever a face comes up and smiles, she smiles too. My daughter is not interested in television shows, just the So Smart video. I don't like the idea of her watching too much television, but with So Smart, I feel she is being productive. I am ready to order the next tape of the series of three.

Oohs and aahs all roundJan 25, 2000
I had never heard such sounds of excitement from my one year old. The laughter, oohs and aahs that come from a short session in front of this video are reward enough not to mention the educational benefits. She loves it and will watch it over and over. Furthermore, each time the classical music changes its tune we are also delivered a new dance. This is a must.

great for kids 9 mos and upSep 14, 2000
Both of my sons started watching this video at about nine months (no more than about once a week). Follow the video's advice and watch it in sections. They'll tire after 2 or 3. The music is fabulous - engaging and soothing. We describe the images on screen and ask questions. Our boys really respond and begin to anticipate the next view. They laugh at the faces and imitate the motions of objects and faces. Even if you don't want your kids watching TV (we didn't), you'll find the music and visuals of this video truly inspire development.

Only for the very young baby -- if thatJul 06, 2001
Our son is over a year old now, with months of watching other tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bumblebee, Barney, etc.). We bought this recently in hopes of adding another viewing option, but found it seriously disappointing. The production values are not on a par with other tapes out there. HOWEVER... none of these video series is perfect. The "Brainy Baby" tapes are extremely overrated as teaching tools, in my view. And "Baby Bach" -- which months ago seemed stimulating and entertained my son -- now looks slow and boring, and he won't sit still for it anymore. So age and context are important factors. SO: I suspect that a very young baby might find this tape stimulating even if parents find it mind-numbingly dull. That is the only way I'd recommend it. Once a baby gets to know and like a tape, you can get more use out of it due to its familiarity. But I would NOT suggest this tape for an older baby, or for a child who is already getting a lot of other stimulation in his/her media diet, because it pales by comparison.
