I've never written a review before, but after reading a less than positive review on Amazon; I felt obliged to give another viewpoint so some parents don't miss out on an amazing video.
In a world of sensory overload, jumpy graphics, aesthetic and thematic shifts (without mentioning any product specifically) it is wonderfully refreshing have the opportunity to offer your child something calming and interesting. Perhaps a move toward fighting ADD :-)
There are three characters in three sections, so you can just do a part or all parts depending on the interest level of your child. The first character is Cecil the Circle. Cecil is basically a circle with legs, no high tech computer graphics here. He grows and swells in to different things, for example, portholes on a ship. He walks around meta-morphing into shapes and objects familiar to your child. The following two characters Tracy the Triangle and Susie the Square do similar actions and have their own shape adventures. All actions are set to common classical music that reinforces the actions on the screen.
So Smart Shapes was recommended to me by brother, a father of three children. His children loved it. One of my nephews, after having watched the video himself and now listening to it while his little brother watched it, was in the kitchen (out of sight of the TV) humming along (Beethoven) when he said to me, "This is the part where Traci is skating!!! I was SOLD! To see him still appreciate the video and make an association music/action at 5 years old, well I thought, "That's real brain activity", unlike the stunned, trance state my kids get into when they watch that other common (sensory-overload)DVD.
So now I have 2 children of my own. My four-year old has rediscovered the video through her 18month old brother. The whole thing has taken on a new narrative in her mind. My son is fascinated by the transformations the shapes make and the way they move. It's his favorite, and we have all the mainstream stuff.
So if you're looking for something stimulating yet calming. I can highly recommend it. Get it soon though, it seems they are getting hard to come by. I'm here looking for one for my godchild....since we're not about to give ours up.

DisappointedMay 30, 2007
By Kelly I bought this based on the "SO SMART COLORS" dvd which my 8 month old baby could watch and not hardly move during the entire duration.. she'd squeal when I put THAT one on. But this music-only shapes dvd fails to keep her attention for 5 minutes. So disappointed!!
