 Great Ballet Footage Not Previously Available.Apr 28, 2006

This ballet material is from a ballet exposition held in Los Angeles in 1984. Ballet greats from the USA, France, Denmark, Germany, and Japan are included. Some names you may recognize: Thesmar, Denard, and McBride; others, perhaps not. This was from a very vibrant era in ballet and it is very rewarding to view. The pas de deux include solos as well as duets, as is the classical tradition, all taken from the great ballet classics, such as Swan Lake, La Sylphide, Flower Festival At Genzano, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, and the Bluebird and Grand Pas De Deux from The Sleeping Beauty. This material was shot on tape, live at the exposition. The sound seems prerecorded and the image quality is not so great--a little fuzzy, but I didn't mind that too much( but if such things bother you, you might stay away from this). I thought it was great to see these stars of ballet, some near the end of their careers. This dvd is in no way related to the other one with a similar name("Great Pas De Deux", also available through Amazon.com), which gives samples of actual performances.

I bought this DVD because I was impressed with Ghislaine Thesmar's commentary in the "Etoiles" documentary on the Paris Opera Ballet but had never seen her dance. I'm still not sure I have seen her dance, because there were no close-ups and the picture was, as another reviewer noted, fuzzy. The audio problems were not simply a matter of recording but also of the musical performance itself. The orchestra, band, or whatever provided the accompaniment was not identified-- for good reason. Rather than give this DVD five stars with a caveat about drawbacks, I think it is more accurate to give it two stars with the qualification that those interested in performances with "historical value" may rate it higher.
