Description:

NTSC/Region 0. Considered one of the best Jazz drummers of all time, Buddy Rich was born into a family of vaudeville entertainers. His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at age one! By the time he was 11, Rich was already performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, claiming later that instruction would have only degraded his musical talent. He also never admitted to practicing, saying that he only played the drums during performances. During his extended career, he played with Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Carter, Harry James, Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with various all-star groups. The splendid concerts presented on this DVD come from the last two decades of his life and show him in front of his famous big band. Besides displaying his enormous talent on the drums, Buddy (who was also a singer) shows his talents as an announcer here, introducing each song in a humorously histrionic style. ImproJazz.

3for rich die hards only.Apr 19, 2009
By DARKPRINCEOFJAZZ "SELIM SIVAD"
this is not the first purchase i would make, that honor would be given to the west side story tapes or the channel one suite form the same show . but this dvd is worth the good price, the 1973 show is black and white, wich was a dissapointment. the sound is below average at best. but buddys stand up comedy routine in between sets is quite funny and charming. the 1986 set is from germany and is in color with averge sound.overall i would say i was dissapointed with the quality of this, but theses are performences i did not have in my collection. for completests only.

3Buddy Rich Big Band Live 1986 & 1973 ReviewJul 29, 2010
By Walter Hern "drumnwalt"
Being a serious collector of the music of Buddy Rich, this was a good value for me. I did not have the 1986 clip which was videotaped in Germany in 1986 , most likely July 19 in Munich at the Circus Krone. The video and audio quality are very good - broadcast quality. The performance begins in the middle of one of Buddy's soloes that the liner notes incorrectly attribute to the song "Time Check" by Don Menza. It is actually the end of the "Porgy and Bess Medley". The overall performance is very good.

The second show from the Dorchester Hotel in London, 1973 is an average quality black and white version. A good performance but there is a better quality color version available that I already had.

I purchased this DVD for the 1986 show and it makes the entire DVD well worth it. I would say a good value for the price.
