This is a reveiw of the film Limelight (1952) a Charlie Chaplin
film that apparently did not get much of a US release until his
all somewhat belated homecoming when was forgiven in the early 1970s.
I believe the story is that Chaplin went to England for the premiere
of LIMELIGHT and was told in no uncertain terms that he was not welcome
back in the United States.
All this because of his left leaning politics, without a doubt it's
clear that throughout his lengthy and well publicised career he
sometimes used his fame to help underpriviledged people and at times,
to campaign for relatively unpopular if not controversial causes.
Also the fact that he never bothered to become a US citizen really
got under many folk's skin.
But all that aside, we still have this late film, a sort of autobiographical
one, in which I think it's clear that Chaplin publicly comes to grip with
his fame, and how fleeting he believes it really is, and his feelings
on performing as well as his thoughts on other performers and his relationships
with them.
By the way, this story takes place in the vaudeville era and before the movies
took over much of showbiz.
In the story Chaplin plays Calvero, an aging and slowly fading vaudeville star
who helps a young suicidal ballerina and of course, in the process, rediscovers
the courage to continue with his career as well. He must once again remember to
shake off the bumps and bruises he, as well as every performer, must face from critics as well as the general public not to mention the man he sees in his own
mirror every day.
LIMELIGHT is a talking picture and once again Chaplin did the music as well
as the dialogue. It is a funny film with dramatic moments and with the
incomparble Chaplin I believe sincerely trying to inform us as well as maybe just get on record what he felt that he put into his films and how he felt about his career and, really, his life.
This two disc WB release from 2003 comes in two languages as well
as five different language subtitles and is a very high quality product.

In LIMELIGHT, Charlie Chaplin's character is a music hall star who's fallen on hard times due in part to failing health. To be funny on-stage this man always relied upon alcohol, but after a near-fatal heart attack the liquid key to his career success can now also be the cause of his earthly demise.
Yet, we first meet Calvero while he staggers home in a state of supreme intoxication. He's not too drunk however to smell gas coming from a first floor apartment. Calvero breaks down the door and rescues a young girl who's trying to commit suicide. Thereza (Claire Bloom) is convinced that she's had rheumatic fever and is paralyzed, but the doctor tells Calvero that the girl isn't sick al all-- her illnesses are psychosomatic.
Big-hearted Calvero takes 'Terry' in and does his best to nurse her back to both physical and mental health. During one of his philosophic moments, Calvero says that like her he used to wish for death, but has now reached a point where living's become a habit that he wants to continue.
I won't reveal the next nearly 2 hours of story but worth noting is Chaplin's amazing agility and athletic strength at nearly age 63. We see him do some of Calvero's famous old routines near story's end which require much flexibility and energy, including a dancer's split that Chaplin is able to rise to his feet from unassisted and without use of his hands. It's a remakable feat for a man of any age to perform.
After a recent first-time viewing, LIMELIGHT officially replaced MONSIEUR VERDOUX as my favorite Chaplin sound movie. If you haven't seen it, this one's definitely worth a look. For classic movie fans, it truly deserves a place in your home library.

Chaplin looks into the mirror...and still likes what he seesAug 10, 2009
This is another one of those works of art that is all the more delightful for entirely overturning one's expectations that it's going to be awful. By 1951, when he made Limelight, Chaplin has aged into a fey, bitter, and self-impressed shell of his former self, and Limelight has all the reason to be simply wretched as a consequence. It also includes some of the worst dialogue ever written. (Sample: "I thought you hated the theatre." "I do. I also hate the sight of blood, but it's in my veins.") But, somehow, Limelight works. Chaplin has really reached down into his soul and given us a warts-and-all exploration of his love-hate relationship with the audience he could never forgive for abandoning him. But he's also dug deeper, and explored the issue of love itself as the ultimate exercise in self-pity. The film's central relationship, between the has-been "Tramp Comedian" Cavelero and a suicidal ballerina (an undeniably luminous Claire Bloom), is really almost unique in cinema: a love affair without sex, based entirely on mutual (self-)pity. The film's visual style is fairly stagey, but then you get these astonishing 'limelighted' dream sequences of Cavalero's former stage act that are deliberately stagey but really quite visually brilliant. It all ties together. And the closing sequence manages to be hilarious, surprising and heartfelt, all at the same time. It's as if you've just seen Citizen Kane as if William Randolph Hearst himself had directed it, but funnier.
