Fantasy Bellydance with its dreamy, exotic, highly artistic non-traditional dance, has evolved through explorations of many 20th century and post-millennial artists in the West, finding its distinct genre definition and a powerful impetus through lavish and whimsical Fantasy Bellydance concerts hosted in New York City by the Venus Uprising creative salon. This compilation of Fantasy Bellydance performances is based on creations seen at the Cult of Myth show held by Venus Uprising within its Fantasy series. Many artists performing Fantasy Bellydance stay within the vocabulary and technique of traditional bellydance, while others blend it more liberally with modern dance, jazz, and world fusion. Other dancers draw on Tribal technique, aesthetics, and concepts using these to create fantasy themes and images. Fantasy Bellydance is not a technique or style fusion: It is an image fusion, a unity of themes and image aesthetics combined with a diversity of techniques.  Bellydance-ish fantasy danceFeb 18, 2010
I like innovative approach to dance and was looking forward to this DVD, but alas, big was my dissappointment. When I buy a dvd with a word " Bellydance" in it's title, I expect to see bellydance. However, in this dvd, the amount of bellydance is minimal. Why, when trying innovative or artistic approaches, bellydancers tend to forget their own roots and technique? It makes me me think that dancers feel that bellydance is not good enough for such a purposes, and it makes me sad :(
I give 2 stars instead of one, because production values are good, and there are some charming dancers and dance numbers in this dvd, namely wonderfully expressive Anasma (though she uses far too little bellydance technique to my taste, which I find rather strange, since she is a wonderful ME-dancer) and Autumn Ward.

Little (or no) bellydancing was harmed in the making of this dvd. I so wanted to love this! I was so hoping to see some awesome bellydancing, but, this was mostly artistic creative movement to music with maybe some occasional bellydance elements thrown in. I appreciate the attempts to create narrative, and the experimentation with costumes, music, staging, and dance forms, but, I was disappointed at the lack of bellydance content.

All the dancers have great technique, however this video is way too cheesy. The "acting" is horrible and some of the costumes are horrendous. I am a belly dancer, and a huge fan of dance, but I had to fast forward through most of this video. I was greatly disappointed.

I was lucky to find out about World Dance New York on YouTube. Then I checked out a DVD by Neon from the Library. I was hooked. These are my new favorite Belly Dancers! They elevate Belly Dance to a high new level of Dance Theater. Like Michael Jackson, their dance videos are like mini movies. My favorite on the DVD is Atlantis - The Decline and Fall. This one is so good, that I hope it can be nominated for an Oscar Film Short. I watch Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance on a regular basis and this video is just as good, if not better, in my opinion than either of those shows. The dancers and the choreographers are some of the top in this country, so I hope World Dance New York will plan to do touring across the US and the World. Compared to ballet, jazz or hip hop, Belly Dance has very few touring companies (Belly Dance Superstars, etc.). What sets World Dance New York apart is that they don't just provide a show that focuses on Egyptian Cabaret Style, they take Belly Dance and put a FRESH new spin on it by giving us new ideas and ways to dance like a pirate, mermaid, octupus, robot or Amazon. Kudos to World Dance New York for their fresh and original ideas on this video.

 Modern Dance with Belly Dance FlavorMay 22, 2009
I am a great fan of all of these ladies! I feel this was more modern dance than belly dance, although there are several really great belly dances. That said, ALL of the dancing was phenomenal! If you have any interest in different forms of theatrics, it is worth it to check out this DVD. The use of color, light and motion is lovely. Some of the costumes rank amoung the "must see" costume list! Gorgeous!!!!
