Easter ParadeMay 14, 2010 A wonderful movie!! I'm happy to get it on DVD & it came so quickly!! Thank you!
Easter Parade a dazzling tour de forceMay 12, 2010 This film is amazing. You are given the talents of Judy Garland and Fred Astaire plus handsome Peter Lawford and the "tap" queen Ann Miller wrapped up in a technicolor version of New York City (my hometown.) You can't help but feel good while watching and completely satisfied when it's over.
A Perenial Charmer!Mar 31, 2010 Charm and good cheer exude from this happy musical and Judy is at her movie-making best. She does appear wraith-like in some scenes and her nerves which drove her from films are beginning to show through. Yet, her showmanship is amazing. Coloring is a little yellow, (blu-ray release date?), but it still is a fairly decent copy. Easily the best part of the DVD package are the complete outtakes of "Mr. Monotony", a musical number unfortunately cut from the film. Want to get a behind-scenes look at all the repeated takes involved in movie-making? Watch this segment through its entirety and you will be amazed at how differently Judy plays each take and lyric. Hers was a musical genius we will never see again. Enjoy!

Fred and Judy are SpecialMar 16, 2010 Fred Astaire is probably the greatest dancer ever. Judy Garland was known as the best talent in Hollywood--and is seen here emerging as the great singer. And Anne Miller was the best female tap dancer after Eleanor Powell. When Irving Berlin is writing the score and MGM is producing, you have all the ingredients of a great musical.
The highlight is Judy and Fred as tramps in the "Couple of Swells" number. Judy outdoes Fred in this number with her brilliant comic mime.Probably the only time Fred has ever been upstaged by his dancing partner. She later adopted this routine in her concert and TV performances. The other highlight--for Garland fans--is the Mr Monotony solo number by Judy, which was an unfortunate cut. This shows a slim Judy in sexy black tights and a Sinatra style hat--singing as only she could. She later performed "Get Happy" in the same outfit with a male chorus in the movie Summer Stock. The latter was one of her favorites--and one of mine.
The DVD digitalized video is excellent, especially when watched on a blu ray player, which upgrades the picture to HD quality. Just like watching it in a movie theater. The extras are lengthy--including an American Masters TV tape of Garland's life, a documentary on the making of the film hosted by Fred's daughter Ava and Garland biographer John Fricke, and the Mr Monotony outtake.
The movie was one of MGM's biggest box office successes in 1948 despite two initial setbacks: Gene Kelly was slated for the starring role, but broke his ankle on a slip after playing volleyball at home; And Vincente Minnelli, then married to Judy, was replaced by Charles Walters as director on advice of her doctors due to their marital problems. Minnelli had just directed Gene and Judy in "The Pirate", which was an artistic success but a box office disappointment. Minnelli was renowned for his colorful, artistic sets, and probably would have had a positive impact. Astaire? Well, not bad for a guy who came out of retirement to help out his friend Kelly. Fortunately, the movie put an end to Fred's retirement ideas from musicals for 20 years.

music and dancingMar 03, 2010 this is one of my favorite movies. like the other movies that i've bought, it goes the same with this movie how ilove the color of the movie - it's rich and so vibrant - giving it a classic look that's unlike the movie colors we have now-a-days. combined with music and dancing, they have tap dancing and ball room dancing, and shows how entertainment back in the day was done, performing in front of the crowd singing-dancing-pretty much wooing your crowd. how they entertain people is like the opera's and theatres with dinner being served. in those days, those kinds of performances boooomed, and i love seeing how it was back then, how they dressed and how those trends are coming back even now, being incorporated back into fashion.
i didn't even know that "easter parade" with their hats really did happen and still happens in NEW YORK 'til this day. that people parade their HATS around the streets of NEW YORK on EASTER. i thought it was just made up, part of the movie's story, but apparently IT IS TRUE. classics are classics, and this movie includes one of my favorite movie classics and a sucker for happy endings.
