This video may have been good in it's time, but it's time is up. Very little information about procedures is correct for today. I was very disappointed in it. It was a real waste of money.

I borrowed this video from my local public library. I'm very glad I didn't purchase it. Although it is a DVD, it looks to have been filmed around 1980, based on the fashions of the participants and the outdated methods and information. Honestly, I got the impression the baby born in the video is probably the same age as me now. Anyway, the hospital procedures shown in the video are completely out of date. The woman giving birth in the video, who has a perfectly normal, unmedicated childbirth, is actually shaved, given an enema, labors in a sterile tiled room, has a fetal monitor implanted in the baby's scalp, is surgically draped and coated with antiseptic solution. The doctor and her husband both wear full scrubs, hats, and masks. She labors and gives birth entirely in the bed, without being able to use different positions at all. Later in the video, a woman asks the "expert" guy about homebirth, and he gave her a very discouraging opinion about it. Heck, I sure would have wanted a homebirth too, if that was how my hospital birth was going to go! The lady who had the baby in the video sure would have had a better time of it! I definitely would not recommend this video unless you wanted to get a historical perspective on childbirth methods and be very glad about how far we have come since those days.

I am glad that I didn't purchase this DVD. It was the only childbirth DVD available in my local library and I thought that since the publication date was listed as 1993 that it couldn't be that bad. But when I started seeing hairstyles from the 1970's, I knew that I'd been misled.
Please DO NOT WASTE A DIME on this DVD! Honestly, this DVD should either be updated or just completely pulled from the shelves. Many of the practices shown here are totally outdated from delivery in an operating room (like seriously, do hospitals still do that?) to VBAC births. And if you're interested in natural childbirth, you'll get a kick out of what the good Dr. Tyson had to say. (Honestly, I wonder if the guy is even still delivering babies!)

Do not buy this.
My copy is so bad that it is hard to see and has many extra noises. I cannot even oouen it to see the 30 year old information. Unfortunately, I didn't look at it myself until after 30 days, so when I wrote to the seller, I was told that it was just my bad luck.

I had previously been looking on Amazon at DVDs such as this one to buy, as I do not plan on attending childbirth classes. This was one of the DVDs I had on my short list (despite the negative reviews), as it had been referenced in other sources as a prominent series on the subject.
Luckily I got a chance to rent it from my local library, and just finished watching. Yep -- like everyone said, it was probably filmed in the late 70s. Definitely not an extensive look into the subjects it covers, and yes - what it does cover with regards to procedures is pretty outdated. But despite all that, I did enjoy watching it just for the basics (labor segment, newborn care, etc). This however would definitely not be a good candidate for someone such as myself, looking essentially for a childbirth class alternative.
