4This is just o.k.Oct 15, 2008
There are some interesting dances on this, maybe three or four. The last dance number is a showstopper. Otherwise, I found this boring. I should add that the majority of the bellydance that I have seen on film that I like came from World Dance New York, which is more American Tribal, and much less Classical Egyptian.

Amar Ghamal is very, very impressive as a Classical Egyptian dancer. If you want to see her performances, then definitely include this in your collection. Otherwise, maybe not.

5Extraordinary performance DVDSep 18, 2007
I became aware of Amar Gamal and Kaeshi Chai through their stint with the BDSS, and I was looking forward to seeing what they've been up to since they split up from the BDSS troupe. The answer comes into the form of this DVD. The first thing that needs to be noted is that this one was shot at the very same time as "Bellydance Underworld", using the same studio, lighting and camera work. And it's a good thing, since the image is crisp, it's well shot (some may complain about the lack of "dancer's viewpoint", that is, continuous full body shot) and the backgrounds are varied, nice-looking and, in general (see more on this below) they do not distract from the performance. As for the performances themselves, they range from good to exceptional.
The DVD opens up with a trio performance using Isis Wings. Isis Wings are very spectacular but somewhat limiting since the dancer needs to stay focused on them while dancing. Nice, but not great. B+
The next segment features Amar Gamal on a solo. I cannot be objective, I love her, and she's in great form in this one, way better than her two segments in the Solos from Monte Carlo. Excelsior! A+
Next, Kaeshi literally blows the roof with a veil performance. I've always thought that veil distracts from the dance, but... her performance here, with a gorgeous black outfit (including black PVC-looking skirt) and a metallic gray veil is spectacular, original in conception and execution. Wow! A+++
Sandralis then takes center stage. A beautiful dancer with great moves and another very original composition using a fake bustle that turns out to be a double veil. Exceptional performance with a slight problem, that is that her dress is exactly the same color as the background and sometimes it's hard to see her. Anyway, A+
Amar Gamal and Kaeshi are then featured on a duet. They work really well together and have great stage chemistry. A must-see. A+
Susan Frankovich delivers a tribal fusion style performance. She should have been featured in the BD Underworld DVD, since that was her natural niche. Her dancing is good, though. A-
Fayzah Claudia transforms her dance into a fire performance, which is somewhat distracting. While better than the fire performance in BD Underworld (there's some dancing here, at least), I don't feel particularly appealed by this style. C+
Then, Bellyqueen deliver a hip-hop-middle eastern fusion, very effective and beautiful-looking. Elisheva is a great dancer, which is particularly evident is this segment. The outfits, though, are very urban, hip-hop-esque (nice pigtails, Kaeshi!) and skimpy, but that may be part of its appeal. To me, at least. A+
Anasma takes the stage with a expressive performance. Her performance is, to me, one of the less bright of the DVD, but by no means bad. C
Kaeshi and Amar get back on stage with the best performance in the whole DVD. It's masterfully expressive, with a sort of physical narrative and interaction between the two dancers that bring belly dance closer than ever to ballet, not in technique, but in the ability to tell a story. Although some movements are not completely polished, this is a groundbreaking performance that opens up new avenues for exploration in belly dance, and as of today it defies classification. My favorite belly dance performance ever, in any DVD, in any live performance I've seen so far. A++++++++++
Elisheva then is featured in a techno drum solo. This is the only misstep in the DVD, not because of the quality of the dance, which is superb, but because it is also present in the Bellydance Underworld DVD, so I have it twice! I'd rather have another performance by her.
The DVD curtains with another Bellyqueen performance led by Kaeshi that mixes jazz and contemporary dance with belly dance. They work beautifully together and the choreography includes interesting and original movements. They're awesome! A++

Some behind-the-scenes and extra footage add some flavor, although I would have enjoyed an interview segment with Kaeshi and Amar explaining their highly creative vision and future plans for Bellyqueen.

In summary, this is so far the best performance DVD I've watched. It's fairly priced, highly enjoyable, varied, well shot and, more importantly, the dancers are beautiful, creative, technically superb and overall impressive. If you have a minimum interest in belly dance, this one is a must and a keeper. Excelsior!
