| | | | DANCE PERFORMANCES | Home » » Bellydance Divas | | | | | | | Description: | | Join Rania, Sohaila, Louchia and Marina and enjoy the mystical world of bellydance. Bellydance is over five thousand years old, with roots extending out through many of the ancient cultures: India, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Persia, and the mid-East. These dances have origin in ritual/tribal dances, temple dances, social dances, exercises to prepare women for childbirth, and dances of victory. Throughout the many countries, cities, towns and villages that have the dance as part of their culture, one can see stylistic nuances in both the dance and costuming that mark the style of that region. This why we chose to present you with several different styles of bellydance in this program: Egyptian Dance, Traditional Cabaret Style, Persian Dance, and Persian Banderi Dance. We have additionally added some modern versions of the dance, which are non-traditional, yet quite popular. Bellydance movements are natural to a woman's muscle and skeletal structure, and even the leg and foot movements are predominantly low-impact. Many people believe that this dance is the first and purest form of dance, since it naturally evolved with civilization, and can be performed by anyone, regardless of their age or body type. This is also why bellydance is so popular as an exercise form. Many of the movements involve isolating different areas of the body, and moving them sinuously in opposition to each other. Other important qualities of bellydance movement involve percussive hip accents, and fast, vibrating movements called Shimmies. An experienced and well-trained bellydancer will combine all these qualities with such mastery that her dance is captivating, leaving her audience amazed at her skill and control. WONDERFUL!!!Aug 30, 2009 This dvd is awesome! I HIGHLY reccomend it for anyone who loves belly dance. With over an hour of performances (all of which are good and most of which are GREAT!) it's good to put on while you excercise. All the dancers are good, but Rania is definitely my favorite. In one dance she balances a sword on her head and does the splits, (awesome!) and this dvd includes her performance with the Isis wings (beautiful!). A lot of beautiful outfits and music, over all a great dvd! There is some narration but it is only at the very beginning of each performance and so doesn't interfere, but it does make me want to pick up some books to learn the origins of this wonderful dance.
Great for ideasMar 21, 2008 I think it's a very good idea to buy it and watch it so it can inspire you for costumes or coreography.
A poised representation of the majorityDec 28, 2006 I would have given this five stars if it had included Romani, fusion, or tribal, even though many object to those being under "bellydance." However, this is a good representation of Egyptian, modern Egyptian, a Pharonic style, Persian, Turkish, veil, wings, sword and cane.
Pro's: The voiceover does a lovely job of explaining the difference between Egyptian, Turkish, Persian, etc., along with introducing each dance. It's really quite educational. The dancers are all poised and graceful, and the use of the standards along with some more modern music is well done.
Con's: For being called "diva's" I would have expected a bit more fire, a bit more passion in the performances. They are all well done, I just would have liked to have seen a bit more "oooomph." Also, the filming is a bit dark. "Rompi Rompi" is also misintroduced as a Turkish song in 9/8, not a Turkish Rom piece in 9/8.
However, it is a nice addition to the library of the dancer. Marina does a lovely veil dance to "Jamilleh", 2 Turkish pieces (although I do not care for the costuming of the latter--my housemate says it looks like she has on one gold sock)) a Persian piece, and a cane dance.
Sohaila performs Egyptian dances with style and grace (in several costumes with dangerous cut outs if the costume moves).
Lucia does a Persian dance with the drum (although the filming on this one is a bit dark) and a more African inspired piece.
the beautiful Rania performs a Pharonic influenced piece with wings, a cabaret piece, a sword dance, an Egyptian piece, a veil dance, plus the Romani song "Rompi Rompi."
At an hour and fifteen minutes running time, this is a great value for the money and gives a good overview of the more "traditional" styles of bellydance, all performed well and with great attention to detail.

Mostly good (some great) performances.Sep 09, 2006 I viewed this DVD to inform myself about different styles of bellydance. It was enjoyable to watch, well-produced with a nice set, and had pretty good performances throughout.
What I liked:
-Sohaila. This woman is an exquisite dancer. I have never seen anyone who has such an intimate connection with the music. Her facial expressions are wonderful throughout and she projects class, beauty, and grace. Her green-dress dance is especially captivating.
-Marina's energy and skill at layering movements.
-Rania's Turkish cabaret improv performance (in the lavender outfit).
-The music is great throughout.
What I didn't like:
-Marina had some rather grotesque facial expressions.
-Rania, except for the piece mentioned above, looked and danced the same in all of her pieces. There was not a lot of passion in her dancing. And her "Wings of Isis" piece was a little creepy.
-I would have liked to see some examples of Tribal/Fusion bellydance, or even men bellydancing.
As for Louchia's pieces, they were nicely done, but I don't consider them to be bellydance.
Overall, it's almost worth the price Amazon charges.

Excellent!Aug 10, 2006 This DVD was excellent! It is worth every penny. It takes you through variations, and solid performances of Turkish, Egyptian, Persian, and Cabaret styles of dancing. It also has cane dancing, veil dancing, and sword dancing. It's pretty educational and very entertaining. I enjoyed it a lot. I would highly recommend it to someone who is not familiar with Belly Dancing, the performances are excellent and the performers are experts in their own sense. *****
