Misleading Title and CoverMar 14, 2009
By Kari, Pediatric Occupational Therapist Professionally working with autistic children everyday, I originally was excited when I ordered this video, however I was quickly disappointed upon watching it. The entire video is just not appropriate or engaging for children with autism. Each "aerobic" section is 2-3 adults doing a sequence of steps that would be difficult for an autistic child to follow, as none of the steps are broken down and actually taught to the children. The instructor is monotone and has a flat affect, as well as the music is NOT enticing. Lastly, the cover of the DVD makes one think that there is going to be children dancing and having fun in the video, however those 3 children don't exist in the video. I do not recommend this video...especially for children with autism!

Seriously?Jun 19, 2009

I am having a hard time with the fact that I spent $35 with shipping for this DVD. My daughter has autism and she is 4. This is basically an aerobics video. Nothing to attract her attention at all. I cannot believe this is what the video is.
I'm wondering if all of the postitive feedback is from the same person.

very disappointed, sorry to sayFeb 03, 2011
By MAB Great premise but very hard to believe children with autism can follow. I am an OT with many years experience. I am certified in children's yoga , SI, trained in Brain Gym, etc. I am always looking for good resources for my students teachers and parents. I would not ask any of them to buy this, even though the premise has some validity. It just does not translate for practical help if you are working with children or a child with autism.

To Kari - OT in Santa MonicaApr 01, 2009
By Joanne HI Kari - have you actually used the DVD with your clients? or are you basing your negative review of the product on your own personal hypothesis? Keep in mind that you do NOT have autism... the DVD was designed specifically for kids on the spectrum i.e. the choice of music, the vocals that you mention... etc.
The aut-erobics DVD was used for 8 weeks for 12-15 minutes a day at the RDI School in Culver City and the kids LOVED it!!!!!! The sequence and patterning along with repetition and predictability are imbedded within the movement and music to specifically cognitively redirect left and right hemisphere brain transmission. Brain gym!
I suggest that you try the product before making such a strong negative persuasive case against it and in fact I would be happy to come to your place of practice and show you how to utilize the DVD with your clients..I am certain that the kids will enjoy it....and I can offer additional sensory integration strategies and skills helpful for instructing individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
And of course, you can always have your money refunded.... please return the DVD and I will be happy to issue a refund. I am the founder and developer of the aut-erobics DVD. I taught in a Mod/Severe SDC classroom, students with autism, for over 10 years in the LAUSD, have a BA in dance as well as a masters in Special Education: Moderate/Severe and Multiple Disabilities, and currently offer Autism Movement Therapy classes on Saturday mornings as well as run my own private practice.
I look forward to hearing from you.

The program worksApr 02, 2009

"School Psychologist"
Aut-Erobics is a useful companion in educational programs for children with autism. The exercises help children be more alert and self directed, encourages self-awareness, and when children move together like this, they genuinely appear happier. After engaging in the exercises students appear better able to focus on academic skills. I don't think that one would necessarily put on the DVD every time while students watch it and do the exercises. It seems that educators and special education service providers, parents as well, could learn the scenarios from the DVD and then create their own music dance program suitable for their own students or child. As a school psychologist who collaborates with teachers, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists, I recommend this DVD as part of a contemporary progressive program.
